She retained her independence to the last. She always put her good health down to the fact she had worked hard. Her close family friend, Lord Andrew Phillips said: “In all, her life was marked with integrity, decency and kindness which permeated her very being. Her spirit was totally magnificent.”

Janet Roberts, 110

Janet Roberts (born 13 August, 1901 - 6 April, 2012) was a British supercentenarian, aged 110. At the time of her death, she was the 6th oldest person in UK and the oldest person in Scotland. She lived in Craigellachie, Scotland. She was the granddaughter of William Grant, who created Gelnfiddich - The world's first and best-selling single malt. He created many other world-famous brands, including Grant's and The Balvenie. Her family has a personal wealth of around £950 million. She remembered her grandfather well. The creations of her Grandfather are still thriving under family control - having been run at various stages by Janet’s grandfather, father, brother, husband and nephew. Her younger brother, William Gordon, was groomed for a future in the distillery. She studied at both Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities, reading law at the latter. She was a dedicated 1st XI hockey player. She practised law for many years after university. She married Eric Roberts, whom she met at the firm of McGrigor Donald. Her brother William died in 1953 and after that Eric was persuaded to join the in-laws and move in to the whisky trade where he ended up becoming a director of Willian Grant & Son for 24 years and chairman for 14 years. All the time, Janet was a benign, supportive presence — promoting the business around the world with Eric. His hard work was recognised in 1974 when, with Janet at his side, he travelled to Buckingham Palace to receive the Queen’s Award for Export. Her secret to a long and happy life is 'hard work and moderation'. Throughout her marriage, she was also a devoted carer for both her mother and her sister. At the same time, she treated her devoted nieces and nephews and her growing brood of great-nieces and great-nephews as her own children and grandchildren. She lived a couple of miles from the Balvenie distillery.

EDIT: Janet Roberts sadly passed away on Good Friday 2012 (6th April, 2012) at the age of 110 years, 237 days.

Eva McConnell, 110

Eva McConnell, at her 110th birthday party.
Eva McConnell (born 5 May, 1901) is an Australian supercentenarian who is the oldest verified person in Australia following the death of Miriam Schmierer on 29th September, 2011. She currently lives in Mollymock, NSW. Eva was still chopping wood when she was 100, and at 102 still lived on her own and cooked for herself. She moved to Mollymook to live with her daughter six years ago. Presently, she has six children, 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren. She still lives in a home as of her 110th birthday. Her response when her daughter told her that she was the oldest person in Australia was “well, fancy that”. “We would climb trees and the roof of the house. We would go to parties and our family would have concerts, playing music at night.” She now lives in Mollymook, but has fond memories of growing up on the local farm near Wellington as one of 12 children. “We did lots of farm work and got up to a lot of mischief too,” she said. When Burrendong Dam was filled, she was sad to lose her childhood home. “I felt pretty miserable,” she said. "All the houses and some of the properties were very good. Now they’re all under water.” Later in life, she lived in Mumbil before moving to Mollymook to live with her daughter, Nola West-Newman. “She has lots of relatives in Wellington,” her niece and Wellington local Betty Lindner said. “We’re all very proud.”
